The Carter House was caught in the middle of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War on November 30, 1864. In 5 hours of battle there were nearly 10,000 casualties.
This Registered National Historic Landmark is now open to the public and serves as a memorial to the Carter Family as well as the countless heroes in the Battle of Franklin.
The modest brick home was used as the Federal Command Post and hospital while the Carter family took refuge in the cellar. The evidence of over 1,000 bullet holes remain on site, including the most battle-damaged building from the Civil War.
