King Manuel II of Portugal (1889-1932, reigned 1908-1910) in an open carriage, receiving an address from the Mayor of Marylebone. He was the last King of Portugal, coming to the throne after the assassination of his father (King Carlos I) and elder brother (Crown Prince LuFilipe) by members of the Portuguese Republican Party. He himself was wounded, and his life was saved by the quick thinking of his mother, Queen Amelie. His short reign was a turbulent one, and republicanism soon followed. He then lived in exile in the UK, being a distant cousin of Edward VII. He became a Knight of the Garter in the year that this photograph was taken. Date: 1909
