Portrait photo circa 1864 of General Robert E Lee (1807 - 1870). Lee was a career United States Army officer and one of the most celebrated generals in American history. He served with distinction in the US Army for 32 years but is best known for his subsequent command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War. Lee's greatest victories were the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of Cold Harbor but both of his campaigns to invade the North ended in failure.
