Vintage portrait photo circa 1912 of Scottish-born American naturalist, author and conservationist John Muir (1838 - 1914). Muir emigrated to the US with his family in 1849 and later travelled extensively around the country, often on foot, and became an advocate of wilderness preservation. His letters, essays and books detailing his exploits were widely read and his activism played an influential role in preserving areas such as the Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park. Muir, who is sometimes referred to as "The Father of the National Parks System", also co-founded the Sierra Club, one of the most important conservation organisations in the US, in 1892 and served as its first president until his death.
