First minted in 1828 for use in Ceylon, the Half Farthing was also made legal tender in the UK in 1842, and thereby became Britain's smallest ever unit of currency. There were 8 Half Farthings to the Penny, and 96 to the Shilling - as the Shilling was held to be worth 5 New Pence at Decimalization in 1971, the Half Farthing was therefore worth only fractionally more than 0.05 of a modern Penny. Even in the 1840s, the usefulness of such a low valued coin was dubious, and the decision to make it legal tender in the UK provoked widespread criticism. However, it was not long lived, being demonetised in 1869. Remarkably, at the same time as the Half Farthing was being minted, an even smaller Quarter Farthing was also produced for Ceylon, and there was also a Third Farthing for use in Malta. However, whilst stylistically part of the British coinage, unlike the Half Farthing these never became legal tender in Britain itself.
