Suez, Egypt - 1870s - A Dry Dock ship repair facility in Suez.  Taking 10 years to build, the Suez Canal was the brainchild of Frenchman Ferdinand De Lesseps, who became the president of the Canal Maritime de Suez (Suez Canal Company).  The official party lasted for 10 days.  An account by Thos. H. Reid in 1909: ÒThe opening ceremony was made a magnificent international function.  An opera house was built in Cairo at a cost of 60,000 sterling.  Verdi, the composer, wrote the Egyptian opera ÒAidaÓ for the occasion, and no composition is more popular during the Cairo season today when it is prod Stock Photo

A drawing by Harold Forster of a combined naval and commando raid against the dry dock and harbour installations in St Nazaire on the 28th March 1942. During the Second World War raid the Royal Navy destroyer 'Campbeltown' with reinforced bows and five tons of explosive on board crashed through the harbour defences, the crew were taken off and the ship exploded. Meanwhile the commandos demolished harbour gear  after which maost withdrew. Stock Photo
