RM2H6WYX9–1928 - The wreck of the Mary Stanford lifeboat of Rye, UK. ----- 17 crew members lost their lives answering an SOS from a Latvian steamer, the Alice of Riga. At 6.45am on 15th November 1928 the ‘Mary Stanford’ lifeboat with a crew of 17 was launched during an 80mph gale. It was the biggest loss of life from a single lifeboat disaster in lifeboat history. The Mary Stanford was a non self righting lifeboat (14-oar pulling and sailing ‘Liverpool Class’). 16 dead crew members were recovered but the body of the youngest crewman John Head, aged17, was never found.
