She was born in 1866 in Decazeville, France, and made her operatic debut in Brussels in 1881, as Marguerite in Faust. She originated the role of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, but her greatest triumphs followed her first appearance in Carmen at the Opera Comique, Paris, in 1874. She first came to America in 1893 and then made yearly visits in grand opera and recitals.
