He served most famously as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) on the Western Front during World War I, from 1917 to 1918. In addition to leading the AEF to victory in World War I, Pershing notably served as a mentor to many in the generation of generals who led the United States Army during World War II, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Lesley J. McNair, George S. Patton and Douglas MacArthur.

'Flying Tigers' was the popular name for the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942. The pilots were United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC) personnel, recruited under presidential sanction and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault; the ground crew and headquarters staff were likewise mostly recruited from the U.S. military, along with some civilians.

Giovanni Mocenigo was Doge of Venice (r. 1478-1485), hailing from a very distinguished family. His brother, Pietro Mocenigo, had served as Doge before him. He fought at sea against the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and on land against Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, from whom he recaptured Rovigo and the Polesine. His dogaressa was Taddea Michiel (d. 1479), who was the last dogaressa to be crowned in Venice until Zilia Dandolo in 1557.

Giovanni Mocenigo was Doge of Venice (r. 1478-1485), hailing from a very distinguished family. His brother, Pietro Mocenigo, had served as Doge before him. He fought at sea against the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and on land against Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, from whom he recaptured Rovigo and the Polesine. His dogaressa was Taddea Michiel (d. 1479), who was the last dogaressa to be crowned in Venice until Zilia Dandolo in 1557.
