He was medieval English knight and close friend of Edward, the Black Prince and a founding member and 19th Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1348. William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1146 or 1147-1219), also known as William the Marshal, Anglo-Norman soldier and statesman. He served five English kings: Henry II, Henry the Young, Richard I, John, Henry III. He was invested into the order of the Knights Templar on his deathbed. He died on 14th May 1219 at Caversham, and was buried in the Temple Church in London, where his tomb can still be seen.
