The British diplomat Edward Granville Eliot travelled to the Basque provinces as a representative of the British government to reach an agreement between Carlists and Liberals that would allow the lives of prisoners of war to be respected. On 27th and 28th April 1835, the treaty was signed in Asarta and Logroño between Tomás Zamalacárregui (Carlist side), Gerónimo Valdés (Liberal side), Eliot and Lieutenant-Colonel Gurwood. Almost the entire Carlist army was in Mendigorria, as was the pretender to the throne, Don Carlos. The liberal army finally forced the Carlists to flee, losing the chance to capture Don Carlos. Zumalacárregui attacked a liberal convoy in Alsasua that was on its way from Vitoria to Pamplona, escorted by General Quesada's troops. On 22 December 1836, General Espartero began operations in the vicinity of the bridge of Luchana, which was under Carlist control. On the afternoon of 24 December, with the help of two British ships, General Oráa attempted to take the bridge, although he was refused by the Carlists.
