Within a few minutes the two year old gelding was lifted out and apart from a few grazes appeared to be none the worse for its ducking. The gelding was owned and trained by Mr. Peter Thrale at Epsom. It cost £4.5million and covered 64 acres of land. Over 1,500 people were employed on the construction of the docks, twelve of which lost their lives in the process. The port was equipped with electric cranes storage areas and refrigeration facilities. Goods such as frozen meat, fruit, vegetables & grain regularly passed through the dock in the years that followed and larger ships such as the Mauretania could be accommodated
