RFGE82XG–This bridge at Benevento (ancient Beneventum) in southern Italy, in the region known as Campania, still has a bridge, known as Ponte Leproso, that is used today and dates to Roman times. The openings higher up in the bridge construction allow for extra water to flow through in times of flooding. The bridge was on the famed and well-used Via Appia (Appian Way) that led from Brindisi (ancient Brundisium) to Rome. The bridge crosses th Sabato River and is considered a marvel of Roman engineering and ingenuity. This photo was taken in the summer of 1970.
