1945 - Inside a vast building on the campus of the University of California, work on the huge 4900-ton atom smashing cyclotron was progressing swiftly in 1942. The work of the giant machine was a closely-guarded military secret. This photo was made as the job of winding the magnet of the cyclotron was begun.
