1950s, view of the ancient and mysterious standing stones at the prehistoric Stonehenge momument on Salisbury Plains, Wiltshire, England, UK. At this time visitors could wander freely around the neolithic stones, something that in later years was not possible. In 1977 the stones were roped off due to the fear of wear and tear and erosion. Visitor numbers have increased so much - estimated in 2018 to be nearly 1 million - that even more restrictions are now in place.
