June 28, 2020. Malden, MA. Tenants at 84 Linden Street in Malden, MA defeated a rent increase notice because it’s illegal under the eviction moratorium. The Attorney General ordered that the rent increase notices be rescinded. The landlord, United Properties, owns 800 units in Malden. A motorcade called the Cancel Evictions Caravan drove by 24 apartment buildings across metro Boston where tenants are organizing for collective bargaining and strong legislation. Tenants rallied in front of their apartment buildings as the caravan of supporters drove by. When Massachusetts eviction moratorium expires, which may happen in mid-August, landlords are expected to file evictions on tens of thousands of Massachusetts residents, unless legislators strengthen protections from eviction. Many tenants are also seeking collective bargaining with their landlords. The event is organized by Boston's grassroots housing justice organization, City Life/Vida Urbana. © 2020 Marilyn Humphries
