A hiker on the track to the 10th Century Rocca Calascio, a mountaintop fortress near the hilltown of Santo Stefano di Sessanio in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At a height of 1, 460 metres (4, 790 ft), Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone for military purposes the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle.
