Djeneba Diarra (22) has been at Baroueli Referral Health Center with her daughter Deya Coulibaly (16 months) for the last week. Deya was admitted to the center because she was experiencing severe acute malnutrition with complications, among them anemia. Unfortunately, Djeneba lost her first child two years ago because he, too, was malnourished. Luckily, she was able to get Deya treatment in time and she has now shown drastic improvement. Deya will be sent home with therapeutic food when she is discharged. However, the family remains without a sustainable source of livelihood and food as they battle drought and high food prices. “I can say that this year is worse than last year, because everything has become expensive this year, ” she says. “It has become serious, ” adding that she has resorted to cutting down trees to produce charcoal in order be able to buy something to cook for her family.
