This unit was the last user of the Avro Shackleton which it operated in the Airborne Early Warning role, 'the Shack' evolved through the Avro Manchester, Lancaster and Lincoln Bombers. It first flew in 1949 and entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1951 being retired 1991 the South African Air Force also operated the Shackleton between 1957 to 1984.

It was subsequently lost in a crash in the Peak District near Foolow, Derbyshire (UK) during operational tests on 7 December 1956. All on board were killed.

RMWHERM8–An Avro Shackleton AEW2 of 8 Sqn RAF after conducting an air defence exercise over the North Sea with a Royal Navy destroyer in 1987. The Shackleton served with the RAF from 1951 to 1991 originally in the anti submarine role before being replaced by the jet powered Nimrod in the 1970s. Several of the type were converted into Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft and were retired from service in 1991. The Shackleton was a derivative of the Lincoln bomber which its self was derived from the Avro Lancaster
