Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869 - 1951), English author and playwright, particularly known for his supernatural fiction and ghost stories, pictured here on the right with the Punch artist and comic illustrator, Alfred Taylor. The Tatler reports that Blackwood was working with the Red Cross at Rouen as a searcher for missing men. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography does not mention this episode in Blackwood's life, but does note that he worked for British intelligence as an undercover agent in Switzerland during some of the war.
