An ancestor's skull of the Asmat people, Papua New Guinea. Dark patinated skull of an old man, the lower jaw held in place by an elaborate cord wrapping. The eye sockets filled with reddish seeds, the nose decorated with a carved hollow bone. Magnificent headdress of textile netting, shells and bird feathers. Height 16 cm. The skulls of esteemed ancestors, so-called "ndambirkus" were objects of veneration. They were elaborately decorated and kept in a safe place. The skulls of enemies, so-called "ndaokus", however, were treated less reverently. T, Additional-Rights-Clearance-Info-Not-Available
