An old print of Micklegate Bar, York, UK before removal of the 4th arch (left). This and much of the rest of the city walls are still intact. This, the main, southern and ceremonial entrance to the old city was erected between 1196 – 1230 on older foundations and has been changed over the years including the removal and restoration of its barbican, and the removal of its portcullis and fourth archway. In ancient times, the heads of criminals and traitors were attached to the building on skewers e.g. include Sir Henry Percy (Hotspur) in 1403 and Richard, Duke of York in 1460
