Appleby-in-Westmorland and the River Eden -----Appleby, Westmoreland (modern Cumbria) photographed in April 2017. --- Appleby developed as the market town of Westmorland after the Norman Conquest and is now famous for the annual Appleby Horse Fair which dates back to the 12th century. It has an historic past and during the Second English Civil War the town was placed under a siege, in which the Regicide Major General Thomas Harrison was wounded. In 1649 he signed the death warrant of King Charles I and was later hung, drawn and quartered for his murder.
