MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN SWEET PEAS Beautiful, Fragrant, Fashionable HOW TO GROW THEM Sweet Peas should be planted as early in spring as the ground can be worked. Rich loam with an abundance of well rotted manure is an ideal soil. A trench about 6 inches deep should be made, sowing the seed thinly in the bottom, and cover with an inch of soil, pressing it down firmly. Gradually fill in the trench as the plants grow, and thin out to 2 to 4 inches apart. When too close they make a weak growth with inferior flowers. Brush or wire netting should be placed in the rows as soon as the plants appear above the ground. During dry weather water thorough- ly and stir the surface soil frequently to prevent evaporation. Keep the flowers cut and never allow seed pods to form, as that at once ends the flowering season. Late fall planting of Sweet Peas is practical, and is best done just before the ground freezes up, sowing the seed about 3 inches deep, cov- ering the rows with manure or leaves after the ground is frozen.
