The new park and memorial, including the restoration of the B52, was largely funded through donations to Project Welcome Home. The Midnight Express plane had been sitting at Paine Field for 24 years before restoration began. The bomber was repainted beginning in 2017, and then disassembled and transported to Boeing Field in 2018. The B52 on display at the new memorial was completed in 1960 and was originally intended to deliver nuclear weapons, if necessary, according to the museum. It was in service until 1991, when it was given to the museum on loan.
