The Rock of Cashel rising above the Irish countryside in Cashel, County Tipperary. The rocky fortress was a symbol of power and royalty beginning in the 4th or 5th century when it was the seat of the Kings of Munster who ruled much of southern Ireland. It was also a religious center until a siege at the hands of Cromwell in 1647 resulted in its inhabitants being slain. The tallest point of the fortress is the Round Tower at rear left.
