Most of the cars run are mountedon double trucks, and all are of large size. These factsmade formerly the employment of an extra gripman tohelp in setting the hand brake, a common occurrence.Such arduous conditions rendered the trial of any brake plify the gripmans duties so as to make mistakes impos-sible. If in cases of emergency he has suddenly to movetwo or more heavy levers to avoid collision, the chancesare more that a disastrous accident will result than if butone handle has to be moved.
