Pictured Master of Ceremonies Jem Wakeman who rolled the ceremonial cheese down Cooper's Hill, Gloucestershire just before 5.30am this morning to keep the tradition alive. No crowds cheered, only the sound of the dawn chorus accompanied the rolling of a ceremonial cheese down Cooper's Hill near Gloucester as the tradition lives on. Jem Wakeman the Master of Ceremonies was adamant a cheese should be rolled on Spring Bank Holiday Monday but with fears that people would descend on the village of Brockworth the only solution was at the crack of dawn. Mr Wakeman said "It's a tradition, the cheese just has to be rolled, I spoke with the police and we agreed that 5.30am was the only safe time to roll" Gloucestershire Police fear that groups will still gather and potential try and run an unofficial cheese and even race despite the event organisers pleading with people to stay away. Normally crowds of up to 8, 000 descend on the Gloucestershire landmark to watch races of up to 25 people chasing after a 9lb Double Gloucester down Cooper's Hill in Brockworth village and in more recent years the locals have been joined by participants from across the country and world. picture by Mikal Ludlow 25-5-20 tel; 07855177205
