In original paper dust jacket with the titles in brown on the front and spine panels with Grosset and Dunlap advertising in brown on the rear panel. Originally published by Bobbs-Merrill, the only change to the binding for this later Grosset & Dunlap printing was the substitution of Grosset and Dunlap for Bobbs-Merrill on the spine and the substitution of plain red cloth instead of fine, diagonally ribbed cloth. This is the author's first book which was made into a silent film in 1913 starring Mary Pickford. The story of Nance Olden, an orphan raised in an orphanage, who becomes the companion of a burglar and helps him in his work. She is eventually redeemed by the unspoken influence of a Bishop who she initially fools and later saves from scandal. A charming Armstrong binding design whose “T" shaped white background panel was a reuse of the background motif Armstrong used on her 1899 masterpiece, Whittier's Tent on the Beach.
