Often, ensembles such as this become separated for various reasons so it is quite rare to have all corresponding pieces. During this period, children's clothes very much followed women's fashion. RMPANNMX–Ensemble. Culture: American. Date: ca. 1893. This boy's ensemble encompasses the historicism that was so prevalent in the 1890s and 1900s. The shirt refers to those worn by partisans of King Charles I of England (reign 1625-49) known as Cavaliers. These gentlemen were well bred and their style consisted of long hair, colorful clothes with elaborate trimmings and lace collars and cuffs, and plumed hats. Their refined dress made them dandies of the time, as would this ensemble, when worn by a young boy. Obviously, this was a special-occasion garment, due to its pristine condition. Museum: M

RMPB0J5K–Ensemble. Culture: American. Date: ca. 1775. This dress is considerably less gaudy than continental and English clothing of the period. Yet, it is not lacking in sumptuousness. Rather, the green Spitalfields damask, attributed to Anna Maria Garthwaite about 1743-45, is richly displayed. The Costume Institute acquired this dress in 1994, knowing that it would be in the Museum's exhibition 'John Singleton Copley's America.' It has since appeared in our show 'The Ceaseless Century.' RMPARW53–Walking ensemble. Culture: American. Date: ca. 1835. The 1830s silhouette was created by a corseted, raised waistline; here a bell-shaped skirt reveals the lower ankle. By the late 1830s, the gigot sleeve was collapsing at the sleeve cap, but in this case, its detachable pelerine, or capelet, sustained the broad triangulated shoulder line of the period. The similarities between men's and women's fashion extended to footwear: women could wear flat slippers or tiny booties not so different from the boots and walking shoes of men. The bustle silhouette, although primarily associated with the second half of the 19th century, originated in earlier fashions as a simple bump at the back of the dress, such as with late 17th-early 18th century mantuas and late 18th- early 19th century Empire dresses.
