The First Battle of Bull Run (the name used by Union forces), also known as the Battle of First Manassas was the first major battle between the Unionist and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. It was fought on July 21, 1861 in West Virginia. It was won by the Confederate forces under Joseph Johnston and PGT Beauregard. It was at this battle that Thomas Jackson earnt his well known (and excellent) nickname Stonewall Kackson.
