Foal (Le Poulain) [also called "The Colt"]. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: 9 3/4 x 12 1/2 in. (24.8 x 31.8 cm). Date: 1882-83. This unbridled foal is remarkably anomalous among Seurat's drawings. Its flurry of scratchy lines and sense of unrestrained motion contrast the silence and calm generally found in Seurat's velvety Conté crayon sheets. Seurat kept this drawing through his short life, after which it passed to fellow Neo-Impressionist Henri Edmond Cross, another artist favored by Robert Lehman. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
