When Tollymore Forest Park in County Down, Northern Ireland was established in the 1720's Lord, or Viscount Limerick, invited the amateur architect Thomas Wright to pioneer Gothic Revival in Ireland, a style that can be observed in the many follies on the estate. Surrounded by mature woodland, Foley's Bridge, named after Lord Clanbrassil's wife was constructed in 1787, is considered to be the most beautiful of all 16 bridges crossing the Shimna River. As it cascades through the park it flows below a perfect arch emphasised by a string of bap-stones (river-worn boulders).
