The heart is the mass at lower right ofthe spine (running down centre). Cardiomegaly canbe symptomless and is often only detected on achest X-ray. The enlarged heart is often aresponse to excessive strain, such as obesity or aweakening of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy), leading to heart failure. It can be treated withdrugs and, as a last resort, a heart transplant.
