At the end of the First Sino-Japanese War, Japan invaded the Pescadores Islands. In March 1894, the Japanese quickly defeated the Chinese garrison and occupied the largest island, Makun. China ceded Taiwan to Japan in the peace negotiations Shimonoseki in April 1895 (BSLOC 2017 18 85)
