Amersfoort, The Netherlands: The huge wooden wheel inside the Koppelpoort. The Koppelpoort, a medieval gate, was built as a defensive measure and completed circa 1425. It combines a land and watergate and is part of the second set of city walls around this strategically located town on the Amer River. The water gate was opened and closed via a huge wooden wheel in its interior, visible today when the brick structure is open to the public. This wheel was turned by 13 human wheel-turners who walked the inside of the wheel, a dangerous and often fatal occupation.
