More information:

Anorthosite is an igneous rock found locally on South Harris in outcrops on the peak of Roineabhal and around Lingerabay. It is rare elsewhere In Britain, although common on the highlands of the moon. Because of its white colour it is highly prized as an aggregate, particularly for roadstone. In 2000 a planning application was turned down for a superquarry at Lingerabay which would have extracted about 550m tonnes over a period of 60 years.
