Red Spouter did not exist before 17 August 1959, when the 7.3 Hebgen Earthquake rippled through Yellowstone from an epicentre at Hebgen Lake, Montana, 25 miles to the north-west. Red Spouter was born in the aftermath of the earthquake. Soaked by snow-melt, Red Spouter splashes muddy waters in spring, so behaves as a Hot Spring. In late summer, the pool is drier and spits and splatters thick mud, so becomes a Mudpot. Nearly dry by autumn, it becomes a steam vent or Fumarole. as seen here.
