(dpa) - Renate Kuenast (Green Party), German Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, talks to Shiro Asamo, the prefect of the whaling region Miyagi, in Japan, before the start of the 55th International Whaling Commission (IWC) conference in Berlin, 16 June 2003. The conference was opened with a heavy argument on the latest inititives to protect whales which are threatened by extinction. Japan and Norway, who have a long standing tradition in whaling, called for the initiative to be removed from the agenda right at the start of the four-day conference. Dispite the prohibition on whaling Norway and Japan continue to hunt whales every year. Resolutions which are passed by the IWC haven been blocked for years due to irreconcilable positions between the advocates and opponents of whaling.
