At this time one could walk freely around the prehistoric stones but in the following decade due to the numbers of visitors, damage to the grass and erosion at the sacred, ancient burial site, the stones were roped off preventing access. Situated on the Amesbury Abbey Estate, owned at one time by King Henry VIII, Cecil Chubb brought the plot of land with the stones on at an auction in 1915 and in 1918 gave it to the British nation.
