Outcrop of orbicular granite Nature Sanctuary (Santuario de la Naturaleza Granito Orbicular) Pacific coast 15km north of Caldera, Atacama (III) Chile South America. Orbiculite is an uncommon plutonic rock type which is usually granitic in composition. Their unique appearance is due to concentrically layered, spheroidal structures, probably formed through nucleation around a grain in a cooling magma chamber. The mineralogy includes quartz-rich cores in darker rims and pink matrix composed of biotite, hornblende, magnetite, orthoclase K-feldspar and other minerals. Nearly one third of known orbicular rock are in Finland. It is found also in Western Australia.
