The play is about opium smuggling in San Fransisco, opium dens, white ladies who fall victim to the pipe habit and "highbinders" (members of Chinese-American secret societies involved in organised crime); interspersed with vaudeville acts. As stated in the play's program: "No attempt has been made to introduce high art and moral teachings. While upholding the virtues of the sinner, care has been taken to discourage vice and offer no offense to morals. To instruct and entertain is its whole object." Photograph of original 1899 poster.
