This modern hospital was opened in 2003 to replace the Victorian Royal Infirmary Hospital in the centre of Edinburgh. It has more than 900 inpatient beds, has Scotland's largest maternity unit and busiest A&E department. The funding for the building of this hospital came from the controversial PFI scheme - the Private Finance Initiative. This is where the private sector provides the money for and builds new hospitals and then the buildings are leased back to the NHS. The architects were Keppie Design, Glasgow.
