Agrigento is a city in southern Sicily that lies two miles from the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded around 580 B.C. by Greek colonists from Gela and became one of the most magnificent cities of the ancient Greek world. Today, the ruins of several Greek Doric temples still stand—one is pictured here. Note the moon above the front columns. The photograph dates to the summer of 1964.
