Ahead of the EDL protest march in Rotherham, multiple steel, re-enforced, cordon barriers where stretched across town roads by police as a tactic to both contain protesters and stop protest disorder. Originally unveiled by the Met in 2011, the revolutionary police barrier was designed to prevent anti-cuts demonstrators marching on the Houses of Parliament in London. Use of similar barriers by numerous police forces has since been widespread across the UK .
