Memorial sculpture Die Wolbung der Hande (The Curvature of the Hands) from 1995 by Jose Castell on West German side of the former DDR (Grenzubergangsstelle Marienborn GUSt) and West German (Grenzubergang Helmstedt Marienborn) border crossing on the A2 motorway in Marienborn, Saxony Anhalt, Germany. May 6th 2015. It was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany from 1945 to 1990. Checkpoint Alpha was also the most transit traffic to and from West Berlin. It was also the first Inner German crossing opened for East Germans after famous Gunter Schabowski press conference in November 1989. In 1996 on the grounds of the former East German border control buildings, the Gedenkstatte Deutsche Teilung Marienborn was open as a memorial site. © Wojciech Strozyk / Alamy Stock Photo
