Henri III ruled France from 1574 until his death 1589, and he was the last in the Valois dynasty. A Dominican friar named Jacques Clement, who was seen as a religious fanatic, assassinated Henri. Henri of Navarre succeeded him. This illustration shows Henri III accepting from Clement what was supposed to be a secret message. As Clement hands the message over, he thrusts his knife into Henri's stomach. Henri's attendants kill Clement immediately. This print is from Rec. de l'Histoire de France 1589-1590.
