The final destruction of Carthage by the Romans, 146BC. Hasdrubal, who had escaped from the city, seen here begging for his life at the feet of Scipio who granted him his life but paraded him before the surviving Carthaginians who had taken refuge in the burning temple of Aesculapius. When his wife witnessed this she threw herself into the flames. Hasdrubal the Boetharch, Carthaginian general during the Third Punic War. After the painting by Ambrose Dudley, (1867-1951).
