The Frauenkirche in Dresden, capital of the eastern German state of Saxony. Despite its name -- Church of Our Lady -- it is a Lutheran, Protestant church. (Lutherans, unlike Catholics, do not venerate Mary, the mother of Jesus.) Churches have been on the site since the 11th century. The present one is a reconstruction of a Baroque church built in the 18th century and destroyed during the Allied firebombing of Dresden in February 1945. It was reconsecrated in 2006, the 800th anniversary of the city of Dresden.
