Artist/engraver/cartographer: John Bartholomew . Provenance: "The Citizen's Atlas of the World"; Edited by John Bartholomew, Published by John Bartholomew, Edinburgh; Fourth Edition. Type: Vintage colour map; Scale 1:10, 000, 000. This map was originally printed on two separate sheets which have been joined together to form a single map. This fascinating map shows post-revolution Soviet Russia as it was between 1918 and 1922. On 10 July 1918 the Russian Constitution of 1918 renamed the country the Russian Socialist Federated Soviet Republic, by which title it is named in the map. By 1918, during the Russian Civil War, several states within the former Russian Empire seceded, reducing the size of the country. On 30 December 1922, the First Congress of the Soviets of the USSR approved the Treaty on the Creation of the USSR, by which Russia was united with the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, and Transcaucasian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic into a single federal state, the Soviet Union. The map shows as "independent republics" the Ukraine (except for the Crimea), White Russia (Belorussia) and the Caucasian states of Georgia (except for Abkhasia), Armenia & Azerbaijan. A number of areas are shown as "Autonomous" (the purple areas on the map), including Abkhazia, the Crimea, and the North Caucasus region (or Ciscaucasia; Russian: Северный Кавказ) - Dagestan, Ossetia etc, Kalmuk, the Tartar Republic, the Bashkir Republic & Ziranian. The Crimean People's Republic (Crimean Tatar: Qırım Halq Cumhuriyeti) which had existed briefly from December 1917 to January 1918 was the Muslim World's first secular, democratic state. The German Volga Commune is shown: The Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (German: Autonome Sozialistische Sowjetrepublik der Wolgadeutschen; Russian: Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика Немцев Поволжья Avtonomnaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika Nemtsev Povolzh'ya) was an auton
